north CAROLINA ESLEYAN COLLEGE Rocky Mount, N.C, THE ECREE VOL. 14, NO. 3 **Wesleyan^s Student Voice Since 1984^^ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9,1998 SGA passes budget The Sludcnl Government As sociation Senate met on the morn ing of Sept. 28 in the Old Doc’s to discuss and approve the fall budget. The SGA Finance Committee brought forth to the Senate its fi nal recommendations on the bud get for the fall semester. Having spent almost two weeks putting it together, the Finance Committee was relieved to watch the Senate not take long to pass it. The rotal amount budgeted wound up at $60,590. That was a far cry from the amount of the original budget requests of more than $96,000. SGA Treasurer Rick Fontana said that it was a lot of hard work for the committee. Rick added that the committee had to look at what each group really needed, espe cially since they had to cut so much. He said “he wished he could give everybody everything they needed, but it wasn’t pos sible." Rick also pointed out that the budget called for only $3,400 go ing into contingency whereas last fall there was $10,000 placed in contingency. SGA President Justin Renville applauded the work the Finance Committee did. He said, “(the committee) did a real good job with what they had.” Justin also expressed concern over monies committed, particu larly by CAB, prior to the budget being done. He explained that tied up a big portion of the budget right from the outset. However, he did add that he was working with Kevin Hughes, director of the Hartness Student Center and CAB adviser, on a solution. Both men had similar thoughts regarding the next set of budgets. Both hoped, for spring semester budgets, that organizations “sit down and really think about what they need, especially since it will make my job easier,” as Rick put it. In other business, the Senate also opened the floor for nomina tions to fill the vacant Senator-at- Large seat left by C. E. Hodges recent resignation. So far only one person has been nominated. The nominations were left open until the next meeting Oct 12. For a complete listing of the SGA Senate members, see The Decree On-line at www.The- Decree.com. By AARON DYSON A forum was held Monday, Oct. 5, to discuss current events, focusing on the topic of Presi dent Clinton and the Constitu tional process. The forum was held in the Leon Russell Chapel with a dis tinguished panel to help facilitate the discussion. This panel and the 40-50 people in attendance dis cussed at length whether Presi dent Clinton should or should not be impeached. The panel for this discussion included several North Carolina Wesleyan faculty: Dr. Jane Christensen, Political Science; Dr. Karen Zipf, History; and Dr. Fred Grissom, Religion. Also on the panel were several students: Pam Burnette, Kelcey Stewart, and John Boggs. The final member of Groups happy with ^Get on Board’ results Get-on-Board Day was held recently on Sept. 30, a warm Wednesday afternoon. Eight campus organizations set up displays on the patio in front of the Hardee’s Student Union. Black Student Association, Bacchus, Club Dramatica, Gos- Pcl Choir, Phi Beta Lambda, the Psychology Club, the radio sta tion, and The Decree all had rep resentatives on hand to talk with interested students and to sign up potential members. Get-on-Board Day, sponsored by the SGA, allows all SGA- funded groups the opf>ortunity for students to learn more about their organizations. It is also an oppor tunity for these organizations to sign up new members. However, the organizational turnout was low as well as the student turn out. Only about 40 students came by the displays. Will Carpenter and Eric Evans were representing the radio sta tion. Will, when asked about the turnout, said it was a “decent turn out.” He also said the radio sta tion “got a few new members” and he “could work with it.” Ac cording to Will, the radio station got ten sign-ups. Club Dramatica’s Sid Grady said “it was a fair turnout.” She also indicated that she got a few sign-ups but said the real benefit is that Club Dramatica will “get more when friends bring friends.” Saying there were “a whole bunch interested,” Thomas Snelling, president of Bacchus, said he was happy with the turn out. Also, Thomas added that he felt this “got people looking in the right direction with what they want to do after this.” The Decree, Gospel Choir, and Phi Beta Lambda representatives all indicated that they had gotten a few prospects as well. the panel was Richard Horner, a member of the Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education. While the focus of the discus sion was on the current impeach ment issue, the discussion itself included a number of different subjects. There was discussion of the previous impeachment pro ceedings, involving Presidents Andrew Johnson and Richard Nixon. There was also discussion about what political motives may be underlying recent activities in the United States Congress. There was also discussion about a resolution recently passed by the Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education calling for Congress to proceed with an impeachment inquiry. (For a copy of the reso lution, see The Decree On-line at www.TheDegree.com.)' This forum is only the first of several to be held. According to Rev. Kirk Oldham, these forums are intended to get the campus community'“to engage in discus sion of current issues.” No date has yet been set for the next one.
